Health Workforce Queensland's commitment to work in partnership to develop and strengthen the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce, and to work closely with First Nations communities and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services is particularly relevant to NAIDOC Week 2–9 July 2023, and its theme, "For Our Elders".
NAIDOC Week provides us with an opportunity to expand our knowledge about the rich cultural heritage, traditions, and practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. By gaining a deeper understanding, the agency can help promote culturally appropriate healthcare services and improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. This year we recognise the prominent role Elders play in nurturing and guiding their families and communities, and being the knowledge holders, trailblazers and role models for the next generations.
In partnership with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Health Workforce Queensland works to strengthen the First Nations health workforce and support the development of culturally appropriate healthcare services to help address the systemic issues that have contributed to health disparities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Planning for our first Reconciliation Action Plan commenced earlier this year and we understand the significance of celebrating the achievements of First Nations peoples in working towards improving health outcomes and creating more inclusive healthcare services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, families and communities.
In NAIDOC Week 2023 Health Workforce Queensland staff connected with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, community organisations, and leaders by volunteering at, and attending the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day (MPFFD). Our staff helped at MPFFD as a clear example of walking together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders and taking action towards reconciliation.
