GROW your own health professionals!

Rural communities are aware what the impacts of not having enough qualified health professional are on the health outcomes of their communities. Our GROW Rural program offers rural Queenslanders the opportunity to start growing their own future workforce by inspiring rural high school students to consider health as a future career.

GROW Rural, and its associated GROWing Health program, aims to inspire high school students in rural communities to explore:

    • What a health career looks like.
Students will gain insights into the day-to-day responsibilities, challenges, and rewards of working in the health sector.

    • The many, and diverse health care careers and pathways.
Be introduced to various roles within the health sector, from doctors and nurses to allied health professionals like physiotherapists and pharmacists.

    • University life – it’s not all study!
Students can learn about campus activities, student clubs, and support services available to them.

    • How school subjects relate to university study
By connecting school curriculum to real-world uses in healthcare professions, students gain a deeper appreciation for subjects like science and mathematics.

    • Making connections with university students and industry professionals.
Having these connections can benefit students in the future with gaining work experience or finding jobs.

What is GROW Rural?

GROW Rural is a rural workforce solution program that encourages Queensland university health students to take up employment in rural communities as early career graduates. Health students commence GROW Rural in their first year of study and remain on the program until they graduate.

Currently GROW Rural runs cohorts of 25 multidisciplinary health students in:

  • South West Queensland - Roma, St George, and Charleville

  • North Queensland - Atherton, Mareeba, Herberton and Ravenshoe

The first three years of the GROW Rural program focuses on annual rural immersion events designed to connect the participants with the rural communities and their health professionals. A highlight is the clinical skill sessions with hands-on activities facilitated by local health professionals. High school students from Years 10, 11, and 12 are invited to be part of the skill sessions to learn alongside the GROW Rural students and find out more about the different career options health has to offer.

How do I get involved?

In addition to GROW Rural inviting high school students in Years 10, 11, and 12 to participate in their annual weekend event, our GROWing Health program offers fun, hands-on activities facilitated in school by university health students for those in Years 7, 8, and 9.
