At Health Workforce Queensland, we understand the critical importance of supporting the families of the rural health workforce in addition to the practitioners themselves.
The QRMFN Family Support Program aims to recognise, empower and support rural health spouses, partners and families. In doing so, we also strive to support the health practitioners in rural and remote practice and training throughout Queensland.
Whether you’re new to Queensland or have been here for many years, learn more about the many ways we can support each other through the sharing of information, ideas and common experiences.
The QRMFN Family Support Program offers the following initiatives:
This award recognises the personal and professional achievements of spouses, partners, and family members of rural medical practitioners. These individuals provide invaluable support to their rural doctor partners and make significant contributions to their local communities.
As a thank-you, the nominator of the Backbone of the Bush Award recipient will receive a $100 Visa gift card.
How to Nominate
To nominate someone for the Backbone of the Bush Award, you will need to:
Provide basic contact information for the nominated person.
Submit a brief description of how this individual has:
Contributed to the local community.
Achieved on a personal and/or professional level.
Supported their rural doctor spouse, partner, or family member.
You can submit a nomination by completing the application form using the link below once nominations open.
Nominations Open: 9 AM (AEST), Thursday 30 January 2025
Nominations Close: 5 PM (AEST), Monday, 31 March 2025

When is the Award Presented?
The Backbone of the Bush Award will be presented during the 2025 Rural Doctors Association of Queensland (RDAQ) Conference on the Gold Coast. The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, 28 June 2025, during the David Horn Memorial Gala Ball.

The QRMFN Family Support Program holds a family and spouse program in conjunction with the annual Rural Doctors Association of Queensland Conference. The program comprises of activities for spouses and families to enable networking, mingling, and the ability to create new friends across Queensland.
The program is yet to be confirmed for RDAQ 2025, but we look forward to seeing the families and spouses in the Gold Coast!
