Years 7, 8 and 9 students

GROWing Health is another HWQ initiative which funds university Rural Health Club students to visit high schools in GROW Rural communities. GROWing Health combines with GROW Rural annual events to provide a streamlined health career conversation aimed at developing the future workforce in rural communities.

During these visits, the university students deliver engaging, hands-on health related activities to year 7, 8 and 9 students, during school hours. These sessions are highly popular and highlight the importance of selecting senior subjects that pave the way for university admission and a career in health care.

How does GROWing Health benefit high school students?

During the sessions, students will:

  • Learn there are more health career options than becoming a doctor or a nurse.

  • Connect with university students who have a rural background.

  • Learn how to use medical equipment such as blood pressure monitors, stethoscopes, otoscopes, and more.

  • Discover the importance of teamwork in a health setting.

  • Have plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Benefits to Schools

Schools that participate in the GROWing Health program will see benefits such as:

  • Enhanced student engagement through practical learning experiences.

  • Exposure to a variety of health careers beyond the traditional roles, broadening students' career aspirations.

  • Stimulating interest in science and health subjects, encouraging students to pursue further education and careers in these fields.

  • ‘Growing your own’ health professional to boost health workforce numbers in your community and inspire future students to follow.

How do high school students sign up to be part of GROWing Health skill sessions?

Your school will inform students about upcoming events in your area. Additionally, you can stay updated by following Health Workforce Queensland’s Facebook page, where we regularly post event details and updates. As the sessions are held within school hours, an application form to attend is not required.
