About Moura:
Moura and the Dawson Valley are situated in the Banana Shire, approximately 200km south west of Rockhampton. Moura has excellent educational, sporting and recreational activities. The nearby Dawson River provides opportunities for camping, skiing and fishing. Moura’s population fluctuates with mining shifts and activities, but averages around 2500 people, making it the largest town in the Dawson Valley. Primary industry is the backbone of both our nation, and our town. Coal mining is worth billions of dollars to our country and region, and Moura is host to the longest open-cut coal mine in the World. Moura is known as the ‘cradle of Coal Seam Gas’ in Australia. Our beef growers produce thousands of tonnes of premium beef each year. Grain, specifically wheat, sorghum and legumes, means that Moura has one of the largest grain handling facilities in the state, and cotton growing introduced a very large and high tech cotton processing plant. THE 150th Meridian Located one kilometre east of Moura on the Dawson Highway, the 150th Meridian marker shows the position of the imaginary line (150 °E) on which Queensland (Eastern Standard) time is based. At the time of the equinox, a day is exactly 12 hours long anywhere on the Meridian. Moura – Dawson River Rest Area Come for the day or come for a week! Whether you’re passing through Moura or wanting to stop for a rest – the Dawson River Rest area has you covered! Featuring large covered barbecue areas with clean facilities, a boat ramp, toilets and showers and an attractive new. Moura Miners Memorial Located in Gillespie St, the Moura Miners Memorial was established in November 2018 by the Moura Community Progress Association Inc, along with support from Anglo American, Mitsui Coal, Banana Shire Council and the Queensland Government. Mineworkers from a range of unions including the CFMEU, AMWU and the ETU.
