Health Workforce Queensland recognises that for nursing, midwifery, allied health and dentistry students interested in exploring career pathways into remote and rural health, placement opportunities and support can be limited.
Are you interested in going on placement in North Queensland?
Going Rural North offers nursing, midwifery, allied health, and dentistry students a bursary to assist with travel and accommodation expenses for primary health care placements within the North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) region.
What Are the Benefits of Going Rural North?
Increases capacity of nursing, midwifery, allied health, and dentistry students facing financial constraints to undertake rural placements.
Provides students with the opportunity to broaden their scope of practice, develop critical thinking skills and be part of rural community life.
Offers access to a diverse range of primary healthcare services in North Queensland, including Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS) and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs).
Enhances the capacity to be employed as a new graduate through strengthening connections with rural North Queensland health service providers.
Who Can Apply for Going Rural North?
If you're a Queensland nursing, midwifery, allied health, or dentistry student seeking financial support for rural or remote placements in North Queensland and meet the eligibility criteria, you’re heading in the right direction. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are encouraged to apply.
Going Rural North exclusively supports:
University approved rural or remote placements.
Primary health care placements within the North Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) region. Click here to check for your placement location is in the NQPHN region.
Placements in private practice settings (including Aboriginal Medical Services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, non-government services, not-for-profit organisations).
Placements within Queensland Health (state government) facilities are not eligible.
