Nominations are now open for the 2025 QRMFN Backbone of the Bush Award!

Every year, the Queensland Rural Medical Family Network (QRMFN) shines a light on the incredible spouses, partners, and family members of rural medical professionals who go above and beyond to support their families and communities. These unsung heroes provide unwavering support behind the scenes, making a lasting impact not only on their doctor partners but also on remote and rural communities across Queensland.

What is the Backbone of the Bush Award?

The Backbone of the Bush Award is an initiative of Health Workforce Queensland through QRMFN. It was created to:

  • Recognise the extraordinary efforts of rural medical spouses and partners.

  • Celebrate their personal and professional contributions to their communities.

  • Highlight their vital role in enabling rural doctors to continue their important work.

Why This Award Matters

Spouses and partners are the foundation that allows rural doctors to thrive in their demanding roles. From managing family responsibilities to actively contributing to the local community, they play a critical role in sustaining rural healthcare. This award acknowledges their dedication, achievements, and sacrifices, making their invaluable contributions more visible.

Award Presentation

The 2025 Backbone of the Bush Award will be presented at the Rural Doctors Association Queensland (RDAQ) Conference, taking place on the Gold Coast in June. It’s a moment to celebrate these exceptional individuals and the difference they make every day.
